Job Summary

Plant Design I/O is seeking a Junior P&ID Walkdown Drafter to support field verification and documentation activities at a client facility. This position will work on-site under the direction of a Lead and will assist with physically verifying piping, equipment, instrumentation, and related plant information against existing Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, comfortable working in an industrial environment, and able to accurately document field conditions. This is a junior technical position with no management or team leadership responsibilities. The role provides an opportunity to develop practical experience with industrial facilities, P&IDs, engineering documentation, and plant design standards while working alongside experienced personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site P&ID walkdowns under the direction of a Lead.
  • Compare existing P&IDs and related drawings against actual field conditions.
  • Identify and document discrepancies between drawings and installed equipment, piping, valves, instruments, and other visible components.
  • Accurately markup P&IDs to reflect observed field conditions.
  • Record equipment tags, line numbers, instrument tags, valve information, and other relevant field data.
  • Take field notes and photographs as permitted and required to support drawing updates and verification activities.
  • Assist with resolving incomplete, unclear, or conflicting field information by documenting findings for review by the Lead.
  • Maintain organized and legible field documentation.
  • Follow client site requirements, safety procedures, and Plant Design I/O work practices at all times.
  • Communicate field observations, questions, and potential discrepancies to the Lead.
  • Assist with updating or preparing P&ID drawings and related documentation based on verified field information.
  • Perform other drafting and documentation activities as assigned in support of the project.
Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of technical drawings and drafting concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs or the aptitude to learn P&ID symbology and conventions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record technical information.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under the direction of a Lead.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on-site at an industrial facility and comply with all client safety and security requirements.
  • Ability to perform field work that may involve extended periods of standing and walking and accessing operating plant areas.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment where accuracy, safety, and documentation quality are essential.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical school coursework or an associate degree in Drafting & Design, Process Technology, Instrumentation, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Previous drafting, CAD, engineering, construction, or industrial facility experience.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs, piping drawings, instrumentation drawings, or process equipment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, AVEVA, or other engineering and drafting software.
  • Previous experience working in chemical, petrochemical, refining, manufacturing, or other industrial facilities.
  • Familiarity with common piping components, valves, equipment, instrumentation, and tagging conventions.
What Success Looks Like

  • Field conditions are accurately and clearly documented.
  • P&ID markups are complete, legible, and suitable for review and incorporation into project drawings.
  • Equipment, piping, valves, and instrumentation are correctly identified and recorded to the extent required by the assigned work.
  • Questions and discrepancies are promptly communicated to the Lead rather than assumed or left unresolved.
  • Field documentation remains organized and traceable throughout the project.
  • Client site requirements and safety procedures are consistently followed.
  • Assigned walkdown and drafting activities are completed accurately and efficiently under the direction of the Lead.
  • The employee develops increasing proficiency in reading P&IDs, recognizing plant components, and performing field verification activities.
We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.
Compensation: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
